Are there other HMO plans that don’t need referrals?

My current Aetna health care plan doesn’t allow me to see a specialist without consulting my doctor first. I know most HMO insurance plans work like this, but can’t there be eceptions? Are there other HMO plans that don’t need referrals?

Aetna health care insurance is one of the insurance carriers that now offers open access plan. One of the main concerns of individuals who have an HMO insurance plan is the trouble of having to ask for a referral from their primary care physician (PCP). With Aetna health care open access plan, you don’t have to consult a PCP--or maintain one--to see a specialist. However, you still have to choose a specialist within the network. The insurance carrier still advises individuals to see or keep a close relationship with a personal doctor for other covered services such as consultations and treatment for illnesses and injuries. Having an in-network PCP can help you save on medical costs. The other benefit of this open access plan from Aetna is the automatic enrollment to the health insurance company’s dental plan. You can use this service by going to a dentist listed in the network. Aetna health care insurance also allows you to see a dentist outside the network at an affordable cost. If you want more fleibility to choose your own dentist, you can easily switch to PPO dental plan. Just fill out the online form at Aetna’s website. - June 26, 2009 @ 2:54 pm
