I don't believe there would be any problems if you decide to get health insurance. I'm not sure what parameters were used by the insurance company to deny your application for salary protection insurance, but I don't think your medical condition would affect your application for an individual health policy. A couple of people I know who have a propensity for depression or are bipolar have not been turned down so far by several health insurance companies. There may be instances where an insurance provider will approve your application to get health insurance despite your depression. However, they might include a pre-eisting condition eclusion to your policy. Most insurance companies that offer individual health plans have specific guidelines in determining the terms of eclusion in the policy. Several companies also raise their premiums slightly for people who have pre-eisting eclusions so you might have to pay more for your plan. You can also try to get health insurance plans that cover mental illnesses. If you can't get health insurance right after you become self-employed, you should consider COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) insurance coverage. You can use this coverage for several months until you get an Individuals plan. - June 18, 2009 @ 9:22 am
