Yes, but it may be a waste of time. If the insurance company with whom you are applying wishes to view your medical records before they approve your medical insurance coverage, they will probably want to receive these medical records directly from the physician or medical group. If the medical records are sent by the applicant, the insurance company has no way of being certain they are receiving a complete set of records. Most people do not maintain copies of their personal records, and obtaining them can be challenging, especially if you have seen more than one doctor in the past 4 or 5 years. Most medical groups will have a medical records department where you can request a copy of your records. You will need to sign a release form and there will probably be a charge for this service. The copy fees are probably not that epensive, but the epense at the time to gather these files may be wasted if the insurance company does not accept them. There is also the possibility that a review of your medical records may spark concerns with the underwriter, and that could result in a deeper probe into your health history, or a decline of your application. Let the insurance company decide if a review of your medical records is necessary, based on your honest answers on the application. If the insurance company notifies you that they will be obtaining your medical records, they should tell you from which doctors or medical groups they are wishing to receive this information. If you want to assist in epediting the process, contact your doctor and encourage them to reply to the request and forward your records in a timely manner. A physician is not always aware of the reasons why an insurance company is requesting medical records. If they know that it is of importance to you, they may be more cooperative and prompt in responding.
