Know your options

Question

Can my wife apply for any lost-income under my group coverage?

I have group insurance plan at work through Blue Cross Blue Shield. My wife has worked through a temp service for 15 years and wasn't able to get any of the full time benefits, so she's covered by my plan at work. Recently she was admitted to the hospital and underwent surgery for colon cancer. Now she'll be going threw a lot of chemo treatments and other possible surgery's. Her lost income will be missed and I was wondering if she has any options either through my group plan or threw her employer that would generate any income for her while we are fighting her cancer. I've been on again off again on un-employment for over a year and she has made more than I this past year, so i fear our credit will suffer a lot in the coming months as does my wife. She really doesn't need to be worrying about bills with all her health problems but she does. Thought someone out there might know about any benefits we might be eligible for. Thanks in advance

Health insurance does not typically provide benefits for lost wages. Employees may sometime purchase supplemental coverage for this. You can check with them to see if they have a disability insurance policy in place. If they do, then it seldom covers dependents of employees. If she has been on payroll with the temp agency, then she should have had social security taes deducted from her paycheck. You can contact the North Carolina Disability Determination Services with the Department of Health and Human Services to inquire about her eligibility. You can contact them at 1-800-772-1213
