You can add your family to your employer health insurance, however, it may not be easy to do so. Concerns such as immigration and the schedule of enrolling dependents in a group plan should first be considered. You might only be able to add dependents or make changes to your policy during the annual open enrollment period. There are instances that enrollment is held twice a year. You can also check with the insurance company if there are eceptions. If you were not able to add them to you employer health insurance policy because they were not living with you during the last enrollment period, maybe the situation now can be considered a “qualifying event”. Usually, you’ll have 30 days from the day they moved in with you, which is now classified as a “qualifying event,” to add them to the plan. If it will take time for you to add them to your employer health insurance plan, you have another option because you don’t want them uninsured once they’re living with you. Get them a short-term medical insurance until you can add them to your group health plan. You don’t have to be part of their short-term insurance plans. You can just get one for your spouse and the children. Get the coverage you think your family needs the most. You can also specify that the coverage begins on the day you bought it so that your family is covered immediately. It may be quite epensive for you to add your family to your employer health insurance but you have other options available. Look for a health insurance agent who can lay down health insurance options. -- June 19.2009 @ 3:23 pm
