Insurance company denied payment on a pregnancy. What are my options?

I was covered under my mother's insurance plan when I became pregnant. At 32 weeks I was rushed to the hospital for a cesarean. My mother was in contact with blue sheilds before and after the birth and was told the baby would be covered for the first 30 days. About 1 year later I recieved a 136k bill from the hospital and blue sheild has denied payment. My son was born 3/10/08 and was in the hospital until 4/6/08. The insurance covered 4/1-4/6/08. What are my options?

It is impossible for us to advise you on this without all of the details surrounding this issue. Yes, it is true that newborns are covered under the birthmother’s insurance policy automatically for 30 days. However, the insurance company must be notified of this new dependent so that they may adjust the insurance premium accordingly. To confirm coverage for the newborn, that premium must then be paid. Have you contacted Blue Shield for a detailed eplanation as to why they are not covering the medical epenses for the newborn? - Monday, October 19, 2009 @ 2:17pm
