My wife and 6-month-old daughter are currently not covered by any health insurance. This is until June that my employer will provide me health insurance coverage as I turn full-time at work. Until then we are considering having a short term health insurance for each of us for coverage especially for the pediatric care for our baby and her 9 months immunization shots. Are pediatric care and immunization shots covered in a short term insurance?

Short term insurance is generally expensive and has limited coverage. This type of insurance usually doesn't cover immunization shots. If available, however, a short term insurance could be a workable option for you if there is just a matter of small difference in cost for a couple of months of coverage. However, preventive medical procedures such as infant immunizations may not be covered by some insurance policies especially in a short term insurance policy. The 9-month immunization shots are usually given to one year old babies onward. The physician may likely legally deny this medical procedure to babies under this age. Your best option may still be to wait until you have the health insurance coverage the company provides. Until then you may get short term insurance for other needs such as infant care and emergencies. You may also consider shopping around in your area for a good clinic that provides pediatric care for a reasonable price. You may also try bargaining for a payment plan with these clinics to have a better deal. - June 3, 2009 @ 2:58 pm
