Even though it is hard to predict when you’ll need medical care, it is still risky not to have any type of health insurance. But if you really cannot afford to pay the monthly premium of a health insurance plan, there are ways you can do and places to go when the need arises. Individuals who have no health insurance can look for free medical care offered in your state or local county health department. Many states have medical programs that benefit the poor, low-income families and persons with disability who cannot afford to pay for their medical epenses. Non-profit and non-government organizations have several outreach programs for those who cannot afford to pay for their health care needs. The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and other such organizations sometimes offer free health screenings. For veterans, you can always go to the Veteran’s Administration and ask for a list of hospitals that offer medical services at reduced rates. The Veteran’s Administration can also link you up with other organizations that can provide assistance to respond to your specific needs. If you are currently getting treatment, try negotiating with your health care provider or family physician for discounts on certain medical services. In the event that they refuse your request, you can still look for other hospitals that are open to such a proposition. If you were hospitalized and it is impossible for you to pay the medical bills right away, it won’t hurt talking to the hospital administrator to come up with a payment scheme that is amenable to both parties. If you are on medication, there are number of pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies that offer prescription drugs at discounted prices. For individuals with no health insurance, try maimizing your local health and medical resources for your needs. Answer by Pat Andersen-- June 19.2009 @ 1:02 pm
