Oregon health insurance that's not a state health plan for baby...

My son doesn't have insurance from any Oregon health insurance company, and his income's not low enough to qualify for the state health plan either. His daughter who's only a few months old has been in the ER twice, and neither of us can pay the bill. Do you have advice on what we can do?

Believe it or not, you have options other than private insurance from an Oregon health insurance company to pay your hospital bills. When you need to bring your granddaughter to the ER, make sure that the hospital you're taking her to is a non-profit organization. Non-profit hospitals are required to accept all individuals in need of medical treatment whether they are able to pay the bill or not. These hospitals have to accept almost everyone to keep their non-profit standing. Some people who don't have private Oregon health insurance opt to go to non-profit hospitals because the hospitals would usually work with them regarding payment of medical services. There are even instances when affiliated doctors and anesthesiologists will just write off their charges. Non-profit hospitals will also recommend organizations that might help you bay the bills. There are also some for-profit hospitals that will work with on paying the bills. The billing department can set up payment plans for the hospital bills so that either you or your son is able to pay the bill. You can also inquire about emergency Medicaid since you don't have an Oregon health insurance plan. If your grandchild is hospitalized and the parent cannot afford the bill, then the parent can go to the Medicaid office and apply. Emergency Medicaid will usually cover a one-time illness. - June 26, 2009 @ 9:58 am
