Short-Term Health Insurance in New York?

I am quitting my teaching job in December in Ohio in order to move to NY. I plan on having a teaching job in NY beginning in February. I would like to have temporary health coverage in the meantime. What are my options for health care? Do I try to get the coverage through Ohio or NY?

You may have a difficult time purchasing a short-term health insurance policy under a New York address. This is because the Regulations in that state are different from most other states. New York is a guaranteed issue' state, meaning that all persons are eligible for a permanent issue individual health plan. Insurance carriers, such as Assurant Health, do not offer their product line in New York because of this regulation. If you purchase the short term health plan in Ohio, we are not sure if that coverage will terminate immediately upon your moving to New York. This would be a question best asked to the company that issues the temporary policy. The policies may vary from one insurance company to another. Have you considered going on your COBRA plan until your new group coverage starts in February? It might be a more logical solution to your problem. You can check with your current insurance company to see if that policy will cover you in New York for that short period of time. If it is a PPO plan, you should be able to receive benefits under the 'out-of-network' coverage available through your carrier.'
