Question

We're planning a pregnancy but I'm leaving my job. What should I do?

I am currently insured by my employer through a group policy. I will not be working with this employer after August 31st, thus losing insurance coverage at that time. My husband and I have discussed trying to start a family in the month of August. I need to move from my employer sponsored group plan to an individual plan. How do insurance companyies figure out when a person became pregnant. It is plausible that I could apply for individual coverage and not know that I am preganant. I am concerned about not being able to be covered. My other idea is to apply for the coverage before finding out I am pregnant. I still need to know how far back they date the start date of the pregnancy.

Insurance companies will consider pregnancy as eisting from the date of conception. This can date can easily be determined your physician and will be part of your medical records, which your insurance company will have access to. If you do become pregnant prior to starting coverage under an Individuals plan, you will be obligated to inform the insurance company of this. Failure to do so will likely result in the rescission of your coverage, leaving you uninsured. Claiming that you were not aware that you were pregnant will not be an acceptable defense if this were to become an issue. Furthermore, most Individuals plans that offer maternity benefits will have a waiting period for maternity benefits. A common waiting period is 12 months. If you leave your current place of employment, you do not have to give up your current insurance. You will be provided with a COBRA option that will allow you to continue insured under this plan, but you will be responsible for paying the premium. - August 4, 2009 @ 2:00 pm
