Question

Asked: Apr 28, 2010

What information to I have to provide to broker for HIPPA coverage?

We are applying for HIPPA eligible coverage through a broker. The broker’s forms include etensive Medical background information. Are they allowed to ask for this information? Should I submit the information along with the application or leave it out and cite the HIPPA eligibility? We have applied for individual coverage in the past and have been turned down for the pettiest things. I am very hesitant to provide any information that is not strictly required. Your advice on this matter is appreciated.

Most insurance companies provide a unique application when applying for HIPPA coverage. Perhaps your broker was not aware of this, or sent you the wrong application. You can contact the insurance company directly and ask them what you should do. You are absolutely correct. If you are applying for guaranteed issue coverage under HIPPA laws, your health history is irrelevant to your eligibility. The insurance company can gather some information to determine your HIPPA eligibility and will ask for proof that you have had 18 months of continuous coverage.
