Will the insurance pay for a new prosthesis.?

I am a recent amputee and would like to know how often my prosthesis can be changed. My limb was already atrophied and the end is going down quickly. The prosthetic leg is heavy and I think it is causing some of the problems I am having with pain and having to wear more and more socks to make for the space. Do I need to talk to my prosthetist or doctor or both. And will the insurance pay for a new prosthesis.

Our website is a consumer resource site strictly pertaining to many questions about health insurance. We are unqualified to provide medical advice. We are also unable to confirm if your insurance will cover a new prosthesis. This would be a question for your insurance company. I think the first step is to talk to your physician, who will then consult with the prosthetist and submit a pre-authorization form to the insurance company. This is the way that most medical claims are handled, and many insurance companies require that a physician request pre-authorization for these types of medical claims. The decision from your insurance company will be based on how the claim is eplained and supported by your physician.
