I believe you are asking about being able to join your husband’s group health plan outside of the open enrollment period? You can always be added during the 30-day open enrollment period. Qualifying events that allow you to enroll outside of this period include 1) new marriage, 2) newborn or newly adopted child, and 3) involuntarily loss of other coverage. Since you are currently on an individual plan, the contract is between you and the insurance company – not your employer and the insurance company. If you cancel your current Individuals coverage, it will be viewed as voluntary since you have the option of continuing on this policy by paying the monthly premium. You should verify this with your husband’s insurance carrier, as they may have their own policy in regards to this and we have no way of knowing if they do. If their policy is standard, they will likely confirm what we are telling you. — July 7, 2009 @ 2:12 pm
